I’m all for the change in seasons, but I’m over winter at it at this point. Unfortunately, for those of us in the Midwest, the coldest month of the year is approaching: February. Feeling cozy is a must during this time of year, but how do you do this without cranking up the thermostat or wearing gloves and a hat to bed? Check out these 10 ways you can add coziness and warmth through your decor.
1. Pile on the blankets. This is kind of an obvious way to get warm, but given there’s so many stylish options out there, it’s worth mentioning. Thoughts From Alice shows blankets aren’t just for sleeping with this textured throw used on a couch.
Going faux is a guilt-free way to enjoy all the texture and warmth fur has to offer. Check out this all the luxurious faux fur in this Yellowstone Club Residences bedroom designed by LKID (via Houzz).
2. Get some green into your space with houseplants. Plants are a tried-and-true method of injecting warmth and life energy into your home. The Jungalow is a great source of inspiration for bringing in a plant family.
3. Add fabrics to your walls. Fabric wall hangings are wonderful for adding vibrancy to a space (and may give extra insulation). Check out this vibrant suzani wall hanging in a bedroom decorated by Paige Morse (via Houzz).
4. Light a bunch of candles. Sparking up the fireplace is an obvious way to create warmth and coziness, but what if yours doesn’t work? Check out how Room for Tuesday created the same energy with this lovely candle setup inside a fireplace.
Or, if you lack a fireplace, this DIY mason jar centerpiece from Addicted to DIY also lends a rustic vibe, adding to the coziness.
5. Build a pillow fort. You’re never too old to have a happy childhood. Take advantage of the need to nest and create a grown-up pillow fort, like Little Winter did here.
6. Layer up. Lots of pillows, sheets, and blankets form a cocoon of coziness, like this one from Immy and Indi.
7. Infuse your home with warm, spicy aromas. The Yummy Life has some great tips and ideas for making your own DIY natural room scents.
8. Add a portiere. In a nutshell, these are curtains for any entrance in your home. In my last apartment, I installed a curtain rod above my front door, making a portiere to block some of the cold drafts. You can read more about it here plus check out some more portiere inspiration.
9. Warm up your floor (and feet) with a rug. This living room designed by Terrecotta Design Build (via Houzz) shows how inviting a room can be with this floral rug.
10. Decorate with wood. Just like houseplants, wood adds a natural, earthy energy to a room. The wood featured on the ceiling plus the floor in this bedroom by Ray Murakami (via House and Home) shows how wood can increase the cozy factor.
What’s your favorite way to make your home cozy? Do you like cozy materials year-round or just in the cooler months?
