Fall, that wondrous time of year with crisp, cool breezes, the divine colors of the leaves, and pumpkin spice everything. Often forgotten in our autumnal bliss is the humble apple.
One way to appreciate the apples’ bounty is by repurposing them into candle holders. These apple candles help create the cozy ambiance we crave this time of year. Light ‘em up, get comfy with a plush blanket and enjoy your favorite book or TV show. Or, channel your inner Martha Stewart and use them in a fall vignette or centerpiece for your Thanksgiving festivities.
Supplies:
- Apples (I used Red Delicious apples from Monnette’s Market)
- Tealight candles (I used the Honey Soaked Apple scent from Swan Creek Candle Company)
- Craft knife
- Pencil
- Small spoon
Steps:
(1) Place the tealight on top of the apple and trace outside the candle with your pencil.
(2) Using your knife, cut along the circle. Next, make 2-3 slices across the circle to create “pie” pieces.
(3) Using a small spoon, scoop out each “pie” piece. The hole should be wide and deep enough to fit your tealight candle, about 1-3/8” in diameter and 1/2” deep.
(4) Insert your candle. The candle should be fairly flush with the top of the apple. Scoop out a deeper hole if necessary.
(5) Trim any jagged edges on the apple’s skin with your knife or scissor.
(6) Insert your tealight candle and enjoy! (I recommend placing them on a candle-safe tray or charger, just in case any wax melts over.)
The apples will last 3-5 days and can be prolonged by storing them in the refrigerator when not in use. You can also dab some lemon juice inside the hole to delay the browning of the apples.
Do you love fall as much as I do? Have you used apples in any of your seasonal decorating?
